280Z engine backfires randomly and painfully

Asked by delZfan Aug 29, 2015 at 02:53 PM about the Datsun 280Z

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Reading a lot about Z cars running fine then stalling like out of gas.  I have
a 77 280Z engine with SU carbs.  Car runs great first 15 mins, then
sputters and backfires out tailpipe.  Rev engine and it chokes, sputters,
backfires (sometimes out intake - can see with air filter off) then catches
and runs great, then does same stuff again.  Any ideas of whether carbs or
electric is problem?

Sounds like the carbs are dirty spray with carburetor cleaner and use the whole can and replace fuel filter if have not done so in a while add carb cleaner to gas tank.

Thanks Firebird. Tried that and no luck. Looks like I'll be rebuilding the carbs. But would appreciate other ideas before I start chasing this ....
