Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I've been having trouble with my gears
in the car. I drive a Fiat 500 and I
recently tried to start the car however it
would not change gears and it just
stayed on Neutral. Has anyone had this
problem before and can anyone advise?

Thanks Tom. I noticed some fluid leaking but I'm still not sure what it was.

I just had my car looked at for took for the same issues. Cost $217 for a new battery and then $60 for oil change that was not needed. Now, since 4years/50,000 mile warranty is up, they want to charge me $7000 for a new transmission!
Had the same problem, I could not shift gears. I had to move clutch pedal up & down to get it into gear until it wouldn't engage at all. There was a leak in the throw out bearing of hydraulic fluid which is necessary for clutch to engage. I'm having the throw out bearing replaced but do not see a need to replace the clutch pedal kit.
Thank you All, your questions and answers were so useful to me. But I still need to know where is the right place that can fix this kind of problem?
The Fiat 500 is the the most complicated car the Italians ever made too technical for American mechanics...to reset anything in this car is a nightmare..I do not recommend this car for a beginning driver or a first car driver. The sensors are unreliable...the ride is horrible and maintence is a constant nightmare...this attempt to reintroduce the FIAT into the American car scent is a failure to drivers and a nightmare for mechanics old and new. Some dealerships...say they sell Fiats..like one I know in St.Clairsville Ohio but won't work on them...some authorized shops say they won't work on inside problems which are many..so what's a person to do???? I don't recommend a Fiat to anyone....
Hi everyone, I’ve just had a similar problem in my fiat 500 that has a dual gearbox (automatic and manual). I was driving along absolutely fine then without warning, if changed to neutral and flashed ‘no transmissions’ on the dashboard. I pulled over and checked my handbook and there was no information on how to deal with this. I restarted the car and it seemed to be working fine so continued to drive before it cut out again. Every time I tried to restart the engine it felt like it would stall and cut out. The AA recovered the car and took it to a local garage who told me to contact fiat. Fiat collected the car later that day and took it to the nearest dealership and as it’s only 2 years old, they changed the entire gearbox for free and I was able to pick it back up within one week! Very happy with their service! When I spoke to the fiat breakdown cover they told me I should always contact them instead of the AA (if the car is less than 3 years old) because it’s free with them however out of habit and I suppose awareness, I rang the AA initially but it wasn’t really needed!
If your are having problems fist check the transmission fluid level. Also if you have a 2012- 2016 model year, it may be covered the the 2016 FCA transmission recall. For those that are left without hope, take a look at this great article. https://www.youcanic.com/vehicle/fiat/fiat-transmission-problems-3802
