There should be a resistor feeding the coil for while the engine is running. There should be two wires running to the primary input of the coil. The one will be for when the starter is in operation, about 12.5 volt for cranking only. When the starter cranking is off, and the engine is running the resistor or resistor wire takes over. This voltage fluctuates between 6 volts and 9 volts depending on the engine speed. The European Fords always used a long resistor wire . The Jap cars always used a resistor itself. These resistors are used to protect the coils and the contact points on older cars
this answer was a great help , as soon as I was told there should be two wires running to coil It woke me up .I purchased a resistor wire and wired it to an ign switch , then started the engine on 12 volts and switched it over to the resistor and it runs fine . I also had a problem with starting and found my new condenser was bad . Thanks so much for your answer and great help . Phil
