1982 F100 barely idles but revs and goes down then revs and goes down

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

1982 F100 barely idles but revs and goes down then revs and goes down. The advice months ago about the gummed choke and needle worked. I have been getting the boys to keep the carb clean and choke unstuck but now it will crank and either hot or cold it idles rough and does the "rev then almost die" the again and again. I seem to remember back in my 20's what this was ...but that memory is just gone. Please help the my cranial flatulence.

check for vacuum leaks, also could be the TPS or the idle air control valve. If possible see if you can pull the codes...

Replace air filter and change fuel filter and spray carb again with carb cleaner using the whole can.

Thank y'all for your answers. If this doesn't work I think I might have to brave taking just the top of the carb off and spray down into the holes etc to get to all that gum. Hope it all don't fall apart hehe.

Ok..after cleaning the carb inside (top still on) and out I grabbed the Auto-choke to see how to replace it and I felt it move in my hand. Smh. I turned it counter clockwise and the motor reved with all kinds of power..good clean burning and air etc. So I turned it back to wear the idle sounded passable and grabbed a flathead to tighten. I really didn't real it tighten but whatever torque I put on the thing kept it from moving. I realize this is shade tee but I put some white out on both sides of the turning and not turning parts to mark where it runs ok. Now when I crank it it cranks up but at a high RPM but a quick step on the peddle knocks it back down engaging the Auto-choke? Looks like it will last til i get to the auto store. Ever heard of that ever turning in your hands? I have turned a distributor but never this. Getting new one and gonna have to put a clamp on the line coming from the PCV to the bottom of the carb as well. Its too loose.
