Smoke n smell

Asked by Brauvura Nov 23, 2016 at 05:47 PM about the Volkswagen GLI

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2012 VW jetta gli has 84500 miles on it. It
has started smoking a little on left side
because it has tailpipes on both sides. Not
overheating, according to the car, sounds like a
cylinder is missing fire, like a put out sound, car
is a manual and spark plugs haven't been
changed. I was told that they didn't need
changed every year. I'm old school. Any
suggestions? Regular oil changes, every 3000,
and no one said anything about it using oil.

I answered this last night, I have no idea why it didn't post. It is white/blue smoke. I have checked in the oil cap, nothing but oil. I even put my finger down a ways to make sure there wasn't any goo/mayonnaise looking stuff. I have checked the antifreeze, right where it is suppose to be. Car doesn't smell hot. I can't really smell the exhaust. I know what burning oil smells like out of a tail pipe, I've owned a ton of old cars. I haven't put my face in it either. I will add a picture to show if you like? Could it be a seal or gasket?

Oh, I was smelling a burnt plastic smell. Not from the engine, but from the tail end of the car. I was told I may have ran over a plastic bag, and I remember doing that. I just don't think the put put (missing sound) and the white/blue smoke has anything to do with that.
