1979 BMW 528i

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

Now we have a chance to purchase a 79 528i. It has 158K miles, is a 5-speed, had the cooling system replaced, transmission replaced, center tie rod, arm bushings, shocks are new, needs tires and front calipers, dash is cracked but interior in good shape otherwise. The guy wants $2000 for it. What does anyone think about the 528i?

Well, the dashes are almost always cracked on those older BMWs from the 70's and 80's, but it's only cosmetic and is relatively cheap to fix. The mileage is good (a bit below average for a 30 year old car) and it's nice that some major components have been freshly replaced. I'm not looking to buy, but if i were, I'd want an accident history as nothing is mentioned about the exterior. I'd also want to know about rust and moisture leaks. A service history would also be necessary, documenting the car's upkeep including things like the most recent repairs. And finally, I'd have to drive it to see if it's my kind of ride. I think the $2,000 asking price is a tad high for what Kelley Blue Book would rate a 1979 5-Series if it went back more than 20 years in its database, however, in light of the recent repairs and proposed condition, I think it's a fair price. That's what I think, anyway.
