how to align camshafts

Asked by WalterDubbert Sep 25, 2013 at 09:40 PM about the Chrysler 300M

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I've torn down my 02 Chrysler 300m 3.5L engine to replace head gaskets. Heads have been checked and machined. Replacement parts and accessories have arrived. Problem, this is much newer than I have ever done on my own before. I need to locate a how to manual or instructions on how to use alignment tool for the  camshafts to time with the engine. I have a Chilton repair manual but only tells me that I need a 6642-A alignment tool but no instructions that tell me how to use. All tools I located on net shows a 6642 only not -A is this the same tool?  Thanks

is this a DOHC? those are a little tougher...basically align the crank to TDC...the camshaft should be at location where a pin punch can be dropped into the hole supplied, so you can "lock it down" location- allowing the tensioner to be set~

the fat side towards the engine? at any rate markings should be visible with the sprockets installed~

there was one dude put a motor together but wasn't looking at the direction of the crank arms which all have a direction...they are marked >>>>front>>>> of course it's going to knock like a trip to the moon~

the Volvo timing belt tool HAD to be used on the 240's without it there wasn't a way to grab hold of a round thing of 11 inches... perhaps 6642A is like that volvo tool...impossible to do without it...be nice to see a picture of it...will search for this~

...alright it's a plate with a slot and a pin in it...see instructions on it's use~
