How does one set the ignition timing on a Ford Bantam pick up?
My 2006 1.6i ford pick up pings under mild load from about 3000r/min upwards only when the weather is hot. Engine temp registers as normal. It has a new thermostat (genuine ford part). Sometimes, if I press the accelerator right down, the pinging goes away and sometimes not. It is almost as if there is a faulty sensor on the motor or the ingition timing mapping is incorrect. How does one test the knock sensor?

the timeing is computer controlled.if it was a bad knock sensor, you would know it.upgrade to a higher oct gas.what you hereing is valve ping from todays sorry gas.
I am running 95 octane at the coast. We do not have any higher octane in South Africa.... Is it possible to set the timing without going to the agents, or does one have to have the computer equipment to do it?

Howzit! You can get a Dastek Uni-Q fitted and dyno. That should be the end of your problem if it is only mapping. If you have always wanted a filter and a freeflow but never got it now would be the time to get it. If not, it doesn't matter the unichip and mapping will sort out fueling as well as fuel consumption improvements.
any shop with a digionist machine can set it.

Not likely in Souh Africa, but maybe not a bad idea to at least try.
The ignition timing is set via the PCM and cannot be manually be set. Check the mechanical areas. Check the timing chain and tensioner for ware.
