I have a 1972 super beetle. When the car gets hot the starter will not encage.

Push the car a few feet and pop the clutch, and it will start. You can drive it all day in the cool weather no problem. If it is 90 or better is when the starter acts up.

you need a new starter- but the beauty of the old iron is that you can rebuild that starter- easily- it's probably just dirty with age- shine up the armature and get new brushes- that's the way the hippies did it
