i wont to get a golf but im stuck between the gti 1.8 turdo and the gti 2.0 whats best to get please help

Hi there ive had many mk4 golf gti's over the years,i would say the 1.8turbo is the one to buy,the 2.0litre is flat on performance compared to the 1.8 turbo which has good performance and good fuel economy and even better when you remap it. i currently have a 1.8 turbo Anniversary which i have had remapped to 250 bhp which is awesome on performance and fuel economy is great, ive had upto 40mpg on a steady run.

it depends on what your price range is and what your looking for...I have a 1.8t I love it but personally I think the styling is much better on the mk5 and obviously the performance is increased as well. also note that you will be paying a nice chunck of change more for anything 2006 or newer. In all honesty save a couple thousand or w/e and buy a 1.8t with low miles on it (say like 50,000 or less obviously if you can find one) and throw a performance chip on there and you will be more than satisfied. But do remember this is all just personal preference .:-)

The aftermarket is better for the 1.8T, but the 2.0T is a better starting point, and easily the better car. It is lighter, more powerful, much better handling, and probably better looking, depending on you own opinion. A good tune alone will open up a lot of horsepower in the 2.0T, so there should be no question. The 2.0T GTI actually has a better build quality in my opinion as well. Clear answer to me . . .

depending on your pocket purse,you cannot forget the mk4 gti and wait for the new gti which is even better and in interior and in exterior in my opinion or of you don't like it you can try the mk5 golf gt which is cheapper than gti mk5 and has 180 hp to get you started;)

hello i have had a golf GTI tdi 150bhp on a 02 plate, since it was 11 months old, have done 100,00 miles, and i have no compliants. all i would say is get it serviced reguarly, and it will not give you any problems

you guys obviously have no clue what you are talking about and this shouldn't even be a question, the GTI 2.0t is twice the car the 1.8t is in every single aspect, power, handling, modification options, transmission, styling, the only downside is price. the 2 liter turbo has much more potential than the 1.8 ask anyone who really knows about GTI's you can put all the money and options on your 1.8 and compared to what you can do to a 2.0 you will always fall short in almost every area.....

1.8t. we dont chew cam followers, hpfps, or intake cams up for breakfast ;) more reliable, and dont carbon up by 20k.

The 1.8 has more kick but is less reliable. The 2.0 is decent for power but is one of the most reliable engines on the market.

I would go with the 1.8t... although i own a 2.8 GTI.. lol.. and i love it.. are you looking for a newer GTI? I had the choice at the time when i bought mine a few years back ( mine is a 01) and it was 1.8 at that time where the 2.0 wasn't available. I would say tho that the 1.8t is way better on gas especailly in such a small car.. i also own a 1.8t passat and it's way bigger of course and i still get 32mpg and the car has 182,000 miles on it :) they will run for ever as long as the maint is kept up. The 1.8t is a great engine. Depends on what you want the car more for in performance.. then u have to look at the upgrades and what are possible.. I would also have to say with the 2.8 it's very hard to work on b/c there is NO ROOM in the engine bay.. I had to tilt the eng out to get to alt when i had to replace it.. smaller engines in smaller cars are way more of an advantage for sure

1.8 TURBO IS THE 1 TO GET OR EVEN THE 1.8 NON TURBO GTI the 20v engine is much stronger than the 2.0 8v gti engine

1.8 turdo nevar looses.. Seriously the 2.0T is a far more efficient motor and can make power much more easier. It will just come down to test driving both and deciding for yourself what you would rather drive. It's never good to get in over your head in a car that will loose it's value quickly over a few years. Oh to the dumbass that thinks the 20v is a more reliable motor then a 8v continue on eating those paint chips.

Hi Guys, were in the world do you guys find yourself? I stay in South Africa in a small town Bloemfontein in the middle of the country. I drive a G5 Gti DSG, now let me tell you this was the best buy ever. I drove many fast cars, German, Japanese, Swedish, and i will tell you this is the best bult car i ever drove. dont go for the 1.8T. i think the only true gti is the 2.0 T. although we dont have the 1.8 T in the G5 in SA. we only have the polo in the 1.8 GTI

Are you talking about a mk4 1.8T and a mk4 2.0? The 1.8T is far better, at least performance wise. 2.0 is slow. I don't believe you can get a GTI with a 2.0, it would just be a normal Golf. Now, if your talking about a mk4 1.8T and a mk5 2.0T, the mk5 is faster, but personally I like the looks of the mk4 better. More aggressive (looking at fender flares and body lines, the mk5 is soft and fat looking). I've got a mk4 1.8T and wouldn't trade it for a mk5 ever.

Vr6 is faster than 1.8 turbo off the factory floor, but the 1.8 has more room in the engine to work with so you can always mod it out and increase the boost...in other words, you have more possibilities with the 1.8T. Those are my 2 cents.

Depending on what years you look at. If your looking at an 03 1.8T vs an 01 VR6 like I was, you'll find the 1.8T is about the same speed because it has more power. Also, I'd say the VR6 has more possibilities, they are just more costly. A VR6 of the same year will be making more HP, but does not have any sort of forced induction like the 1.8T. If you turbo'd the VR6 then you'd be making much more than the 1.8T, but it'd cost a bit, where as the 1.8T already has a forced induction, but upgrading it would be cheaper because it already is made for a turbo.

2.0 litre T mk5 is obviously the clear choice, unless your looking for economy, then u mind as well get a prius or a beetle... for performance u want the mk5 GTI, handling and power, much nicer than the previous mk4

i just got my 1.8t and i love it! i was torn between that and the vr6, but i went with the 1.8t .i do a lot of highway driving so it saves me on gas, and although its a 4 cylinder, its a lot easier to work on and i do a lot of stuff to it. im planning on putting in a borla exhaust, cool-air intake, im going to chip it, and i was thinking about putting a bigger turbo in it, idk we'll see what the year brings. idk youre not looking at the vr but i really love my 1.8t :D good luck!

hey you should look at a vr6, 2.0 has no balls and 1.8t has no sound. Vr6 has a mean growl and is easily customised and fuel economy is great for a 2.8l vr6 engine

Go to vwvortex.com and look around in the forums, a lot of the replies here are from people who think they know what their talking about. For example, CAI, especially on a turbo, it a waste of money.

First of Drew 2.0 mk5 is better over all then mk4 1.8T ? ha Bro idk what your smoking ! Chris you dont either one of those bull shit cars if you want a real car that is gonna burn the shit out of either one of thos you need a GTI 337 or a 20th anniversary edition which are pretty much the samee and more rare then any of this cars ! If you want to see your same car everyday and be slow get a normal mk4 1.8t or mk5 2.0 go for it but if you wanna drive around and maybe just maybe see you car then go with a real car and get a 337 blow all this cars away tthat these guys are talking about. But yes it will take more time to find one and cost more then just basic 1.8t but it will be worth it in the end trust me, by the way you want a 6 speed also dont settle for mk4 1.8t 5 speed naa...go big or go home son ! and if you dont like any of this then just save some more and buy an R32 but 04 becasue 08 is paddles and thats some stupid shit !!

haha you must know absolutely nothing about either of those engines, your 1.8T is significantly slower than the MK5 2.0TFSI which is the engine in my car, your car tuned makes 220hp and 250tq at most at the flywheel, my car makes 255hp and over 300tq at the crank, your car also doesnt come with sway bars or stock xenon lights those are just a few things, talking about going big or going home huh? your engine makes a significant 50hp less even with a turbo upgrade then mine does with one, your car is less refined and the 1.8t engine platform has much less potential, still not a bad car it lacks a whole lot that the MKV has. my car is making 285 hp and 335 tq at the moment on the stock k04 turbo, trust me i would pull on you pretty hard buddy, at least 5 or 6 cars and maybe you should go to this website and you might learn a little bit about the power difference between the two engines www.goapr.com

The golf 4 gti is in fact more costly to service its true my friend had a 1.6 and a gti mk4 golf he said the service was more than the mk 5 the clutch was over 5k. That's here in South Africa I don't know do a little digging see for yourself
