manual vs automatic

Should I avoid older Jetta's that are automatic transmissions?
I am looking for a 1998 - 2001 (newer only if I can afford it).
What does it cost to fix the transmission if it goes?

i just sold my 98 jetta i would deff recommend the 5 speed over auto just for the fact of performance the auto really lags and to repair an auto your looking at big $$$
