Rear lights

I just bought my son a 2005 Passat GLX.  He does not have rear lights when the running lights are on.  He has to turn the lights all the way on to get rear lights.  Is this normal?  I have a 2012 Passat TDI and I have rear lights when the automatic lights are on.  I just do not know this car as I do the 2012.

Your 2ights012 probably has automatic headlights and the 2005 does not. When the 2005 has DRLs on the only lights that should be on are the headlights. No other lights should be on.
