why causes steering wheel to shake when I apply brakes?

Asked by symo64 Oct 20, 2015 at 06:56 PM about the Hyundai Elantra GT

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

the driver side front control arm on my 2001 elantra broke while turning a
corner at low speed. I had the control arm replaced.the axle rebuilt.the tie
rod replaced and a four wheel alignment done. Now the steering wheel
shakes when I apply the brakes.Any ideas? All work was done by dealer.
The tech told me the rear rotors and pads need to be replaced which I will
do myself.Could the rotor or caliper be damaged from the control arm
breaking?

If dealer told you the steering wheel is shaking because the rear rotors need to be replaced do not take your vehicle back to them because they do not know what the are doing. If steering wheel shakes when the brakes are applied most likely the front rotors or warped. Could also be a seized caliper piston or collapsed brake hose but i would start with the front rotors first.
