Problems starting.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
My 2018 Nissan Rogue sometimes takes several tries to start. It is a push
button start. The dealer has replaced the battery in the key fob and has done
diagnostics on the fob and brakes (you need to press the brake while pushing
the start button). They can find nothing wrong. The remote start sometimes
works in this situation, but not always. Anyone have a solution?

I have similar issue. Car starts but sometimes struggles. I have changed batteries on my fob.
Also running into this issue today. I have a 2018 Nissan Rogue which I bought brand new. Find it a bit odd that this is occurring since it’s less than 2 years from purchase date. Will visit the dealer tomorrow for diagnostic.
I have since discovered that the mistake I was making was in trying to press the break and start button simultaneously, which I had been led to believe was necessary by the dealer. A friend with a Rogue told me that the brake must be pressed FIRST. I have been doing it this way for 3 months now, with no issues.
I have the same issue. I have a nissan rogue 2017 model. It wont start sometimes. I brought it to the dealership and told me they could not find anything wrong. But in the following morning same issue it takes me 6 tries to started the engine. What was wrong??? Are we going to get rid of nissan brand??!!
I had the same oroblowith my 2016 Nissan Rogue. In November, they couldn’t find anything wrong with the key fob or electrical system. Had to take it back this month because it would take up to 15 minutes for it to start and while driving I got a message stating no key was detected. They replaced the battery, and it runs fine. I was told the next time I have that problem to place my key fob on the Start/Puah button and then try to start it.
I have a 2018 Nissan Rogue SL less than 4k miles and 6 months old. Started with not being able to start with clicking and flashing light. Dealer replaced battery and told me it was my dash cam and iphone charger. So I disconnected those, and within a few days, same issue. Battery does not seem to charge fully, but dealer claims the charging from the car is ok. Dealer has had the car sitting a few days and its been ok. However, they aren't commuting to work, and really driving the car. Any thoughts?
Today, 5-28-2019 I have a 2014 Nissan Rogue, 82K miles, started having the ignition making a staring sound as if the battery was low. Auto Zone checked the battery and is "Very Good" I thought it may be the starter but because that usually narrows down the problem. Process of elimination. But hear this, I changed the starter, yes I did it, it took me a couple of hours but I did it. Part Cost $289.00 and a $40 dollar core - First start .... "same problem", second start, turned on perfectly. This repair -troubleshooting was 5-24-2019, the Rogue continues to do the same, sometimes it starts without a problem 5 times during the day, at times it takes 2-3 pushes until it starts. Folks I also replaced the battery on the remote. I'm attempting at a later date replacing the Push Button Switch. I think Nissan has an issue with the push switch, I think the design causes a voltage drop that gives the effect of a low battery and that's why it seems to cut off. It's plastic what can you expect.. I think Nissan is keeping it quiet. My good friend Christine has a Nissan Pathfinder, push button switch and has the same issue, so friends, if you want to change the starter you need to have a good half inch socket set and a good 2 ft extension assortment because you will not be able to loosen one of two. Picture attached is the area to loosen the starter. one bolt is about 6-8 inches long and is a different socket size from the other. you'll have to pull it from underneath the battery tray area which means you'll have to remove that whole area. Find a place where the starter can be checked before you remove it, or you'll end up like me with an extra good Nissan Factory starter, I video taped some phases of the repair just to show the wife how much work I did, friends this is not cheap if you take it to a repair shop. I hope my experience with this car helps you in any way. God Bless you folks. Hugo Espinosa in Houston Texas clearing the data waves.
My case is even worst. Mine is a 2017 Nissan Rouge. The battery was dead one day that I had to call the tow truck to take my car to the dealership. The dealership charged my car but the next day morning, I couldn't start my car. I ended up calling the tow truck again but the two truck driver did a booster so I could start my car. Before the booster, I could feel the car had some power and it couldn't detect my key too. I was told by the driver that because of the battery problem, nothing would work. I left my car with the dealership overnight and they couldn't start the next day morning. They replaced a new battery and after a week later the same thing happened again. Something drained the battery away when it's off. They're still investigating the problems but they reported this to the head office in Japan.
I am having the same issue... I just bought a portable jumper and am charging it up just in case while running a smart charger on the battery. Tomorrow morning I am going to go buy a new battery but this makes me nervous. I think there is something inherently wrong with the push to start system. Hold tight...
Similar with my 2018 Nissan Rogue Sport with 5K miles on it. Twice now wouldn't start, all electrical systems working, had towed to dealer and they can't find the problem. Feel this is unsafe and car should be replaced (lemon law type issue, unsafe to drive as may not start at unpredictable time/location) - anyone else with similar problem and what was their solution ?

I’m having a similar issue with my Nissan Rogue SV 2017. It clicks but won’t start it keeps saying it couldn’t detect my keyfob then it could. I even used my spare and it still won’t start.
I have a 2015 Nissan Rogue and it has been having extended start times for over a year. I died completely one day while I was running errands, so I had it towed to a local service station. They replaced the battery and it did start but you still had to hold the button in for a while. I took it to the Nissan dealership and they ran diagnostics on it and kept it for two days. Nothing showed up, but he agreed there is a problem. He suggested a $185 cleaning service then on the next gas fueling I buy the highest priced gas to run through it. I did both of these things and no change. Trying to get in touch with the dealership again to see if they have any other suggestions. Any advice would be appreciated in helping steer them in the right direction.
My 2017 Rogue won't start in cold weather, seems like anything below 30 degrees and I don't have a car. Dealership placed a new battery in the car and it died again less than a month later. To be clear, I don't have a push button start. The vehicle is at the second dealership but seeing all of you also struggling with this issue leads me to believe it won't be fixed. My plan is to sell the vehicle before the 3 year, 30,000 miles warranty expires.
2015 Nissan rogue rough idle when cold starting there is a tech service bulletin #NTB17-080A issued Aug 30 2017 had my ecm reprogramed today now we wait an see if it is fixed
After the reprogram of the ecm vehicle sat outside at -7C and started excellent so I guess it is fixed
This is too much! This car left me stranded and dumbfounded last week when it started doing this. Since then it’s happened two times. This is no coincidence. It’s time for Nissan to speak up! What’s really up with this push start?
Same issue. 2015 rogue. Battery tested - fine. Going in for diagnostics next week ($110 for them to tell me what's wrong, if anything). She did say something about a computer update needed for cold start? Ready to trade it in. Done with Nissan.. Plus the service dept manager at my location is very rude... Which i have no patience for.
Sane issue. Certified 2018 rogue. Had 4 weeks. Died twice. Once required tow. Second required jump. Dealer keeping it fir a few days. My college kids car. I traded in a great Honda for it. Really mad. Tried to imply user error.
after the ecm was reprogramed it has worked fine for me

2018 nissan rogue. Didn't have car on. And was just loading things into my car for a move. And went to start it and nothing. This is now the 2nd time. Last time a tow service came out they diagnosed my battery and said it was fine. Nothing wrong with my alternator either. But can't start my vehicle. I put foot on brake pedal doesnt do anything either. Just makes clicking noise. I am at least in a safe place but like yall have said already this is ridiculous. I have had trouble with touch screen stereo as well but I know how to reset that.
Tankgirl1984, the same thing you explain has happened to me. Have you gotten resolution?
they reprogramed the emc and i have had no issues this was under a recall notice
2019 Sentra. Has been leaving me stranded all of a sudden. They reprogrammed it and got me new fobs. A week later same thing. Please contact me if you know whats wrong. Rosie enymse@gmail.com

I have the same issue battery fine cables fine kept on a maintenance charger and sometimes will just click. I saw a note about a recall which recall I can not find anything on it
Finally got rid of the 2015 Nissan. Transmission was starting to slip Dealer said needs to be replaced 115000km on vehicle no help from Nissan Canada to repair. Bill estimate was close to $5000.00 for a rebuilt one with 1 year or 20000 km warranty. I bit the bullet and took a loss but now have a 2020 toyota corolla. Never buy another Nissan lesson learned.
i have a 2017 nissan sports rogue, when im about to start it up it doesnt even click or anything, every electric instrument in the car works, but it doesnt start up. i them tried what is suggested above trying to push in break than start button several times, it finally worked, any suggestions on what to do next, replace battery? battery on key fob? does anyone know what maybe the problem?
How old is the Battery in your car? (Not the FOB Battery) Batteries do not last like they use too. It takes cranking amps from your battery to cold start your car. This is the easiest thing to have checked and see if it needs to be replaced. An auto parts store that sells batteries can check this for you. Car batteries use to last 5 to 7 years now 3 to 4 years tops.
Same issues as everyone here. Even though the battery was not bad (tested multiple times by multiple devices) we went ahead & replaced the car battery. Also replaced key fob battery. Still, the car will only start with a jump. I feel that this is ridiculous as the main reason for investing so much in a new vehicle is to have a SAFE, RELIABLE means of transportation. I have to pull out a jump box everywhere I go & under 80k miles. No idea what to even try next.
Same issue here. Used to be once in awhile but now more often. After parking the lights will flash and sometimes it won't allow us to lock the doors even. Last night I couldn't even get it to start so will go out and try again. I will replace the fob batteries but not confident that is the issue since we tried both. It is almost like it is in some sort of lock mode and I can't get it to unlock. No lights are coming on inside but I feel it has power but also may have them come check the battery.

I have a 2018 Nissan Rogue SV with power lift gate and remote start. What Nissan is not telling you. The charging system on the Vehicle only maintains 12.4 volts Older cars maintain a 12.8 to 13.2 volt battery. This voltage allows the battery to be at full capacity/ amperage. This allows for accessories to slowly drain the capacity of the battery. When you shut off the vehicle, The battery starts to drain and when you attempt to start the vehicle The voltage falls below 12 volts. Nissan claims you should be able to start the vehicle at 10 volts. Here is why that is not good for the Battery. The Battery is designed to hold 12 volts or greater charge. As the battery voltage increases so the the capacity or amperage of the battery.. A battery that is depleted below 12 volts causes damage to the battery. The capacity or amperage should be adequate to allow the starter to crank over the engine. 55 to 65% of the battery capacity is used to crank the engine. So starting with a low capacity battery causes starter cranking problems. Reading information from other Nissan Rogue owners that they are using a jump starter or charging the battery helps start the vehicle. The battery is up to full capacity at 12.6 volts When Nissan Re-Programs the ECM The Voltage of the Battery is regulated to 12.6 or higher volts instead of 12.4 volts This allows the battery to be stored at a higher capacity Amperage to allow for battery drain. The battery is rated for 535 Cold cranking amps I modified the battery tray and installed a 620 cold cranking amp battery which has a higher capacity So the battery drains down slower and I have not had anymore issues with the vehicle not starting Hope this helps you decide how to resolve the battery / starter problem

Same here, Nissan rogue doesn't start when cold weather. It says "key system error" everytime the temperature is below -10 degrees. It's the third time we bring the car to the dealer and they can't find the problem.

2018 Nissan Rogue Starting problems. I have had no further issues with the 2018 Nissan Rogue not starting after a higher amperage battery was installed. Nissan states that the Nissan Rogue is a High drain vehicle for the charging system. The vehicle is not intended to sit for any period of time. The vehicle is designed to be driven constantly. Previously I informed you that the battery is not fully charged until the battery voltage reaches 2.6 to 2.8 amps. The Nissan rogue only charges the battery to 2.4 volts so the battery never gets fully charged. That is not good practice to maintain a battery. 55% to 65% of the battery capacity is used to start the vehicle. Cold cranking amps are reduced in colder weather below freezing. In colder climates and small heaters are used to heat crankcase oil and battery's You can install a dipstick oil crankcase heater very easily if your climate is below freezing for long period of time. To turn over a vehicle sitting in 32 degrees or below takes a strong battery if the crankcase oil is not heated. I have installed a battery tender on my vehicle to keep the battery charged and up to the 100% level. I have monitored the drain of the battery when the vehicle sits for 3 to 5 days without being started. The battery voltage after I shut off the vehicle and park it is 12.5 volts. After 3 days the battery voltage drains to 12 .1 volts. After 5 days the battery voltage is 11.9 volts. So trying to start your vehicle after 5 days of non use creates a power issue for the battery and I am in a warm climate. If the weather is cold, then the battery strains to crank the cold engine over. My battery tender charger only charges the battery at 1.5 amps. a hour. The charger conditions the battery slowly and keeps the voltage at 12.8 amps So if you have the ECM reprogrammed at the dealership to maintain a battery voltage of 12.8 amps and increase the charging voltage from 12.8 volts to 13.1 volts The battery will be fully charged each time of use when you shut off the vehicle. The Rogue was designed with energy efficiency in mind. My other vehicles are the same way. The vehicles are not designed to be driven constantly. If the dealership re-programs your ECM. Your problems will be resolved. I just installed a larger capacity battery and a Battery tender charger. Hope this helps you resolve your starting problem.. .
August 17, 2023. Hello, everyone. 2021 Nissan Rogue SL issue with starting problems around 23,000 miles, ugh! Yes, I bought it brand new. I first went to the dealership noticing it was hesitant to start after pushing the brake down and the start button, or doing both together and still my vehicle would not start after the first try. Sometimes it would and sometimes it would not. I had the batter replaced months beforehand because it went out one day to leave for a graduation and nothing! Ok, so back to the present. The dealership said it was fine when I drove it over there and the supposedly checked it out. Got home and the next day same issues--sometimes it starts on first try and sometimes it takes multiple tries. So, this time I had it towed to them and I sent them a video of my vehicle from my garage camera and the sound it was making as it was trying to start. Lo and behold, it was the FUEL PUMP. Brand new vehicle and the battery had to be replaced and then fuel pump. So, that means it was never checked out the first time I went. I am glad this was still under warranty. If you know something is wrong keep at them or go to another Nissan dealership and have proof of the issues and how it sounds for a better diagnosis. I like my Rogue, but goodness gracious! Take care, everyone.
