two types of transmission go in a 2004 Buick LeSabre how do I find out which one

Don't know where you got the info on two different transmissions.....they are all pretty much the same after GM went to electronic transmission around 1992
Replace what is standard for your car...... I wouldn't fool around spending extra money on retrofitting a 2004....no matter what anyone tells you.
Have the parts department at your local Buick dealership look it up for you. They may need the VIN number.
I want to revise my answer slightly.... The LeSabre and other vehicles may have offered a trailer towing package and in some cases the final drive in the transmission would be a higher ratio. As noted above, any GM dealer parts department could look up your LeSabres DNA and tell you if it has the package that might change the transmission. With a little effort you can also do the research... usually on the underside of the trunk lid or on the spare tire cover is a 2 X 4 label with all the codes for your car. The transmission code starts with "M".......example MD8 = Transmission, Auto, 4 speed THM 700 R4. Take a picture of the label (see attached sample) then print it , then do a Google search and you will find several sites that list all the codes and you will know which transmission it has.
txbarney... info is kinda right in 04 there is 2 different tranny opt for that car a 2.86 and 3.05 gear.... but the opt code your looking for for a 04 is either going to be a FQ3.(2.86) OR F83 Which is 3.05 gear
