if your brakes are good, start by going trough your front end and see if you have any worn suspension components.

All my children have explorers from 96 to 03. All developed the braking clunk. It's a worn suspension part. I've rebuilt all of them myself and saved over a grand on each. The probably clunk is a grommet worn off on a sway bar link, ball joint, etc. Front ends seems to go out on those explorers around 70K.

Very well known Ford Explorer problem. It is programming in the computer, they reprogrammed my computer and it went away, Ford did it for free
