Key for 2002 ford explorer can the anti thief key just go bad  























it will not start it tuns over and the gas pressure is at 62 lbs. and has spark
spray starting fluid in it and it starts then quits. the anti thief blinks tried
every thing

It's not common for the transponder chip to go bad, but you may have a problem with the programming in the PCM (powertrain control module) Ford did issue a TSB (technical service bulletin) for the 2004-2005 Explorer models that were having this issue, especially if it got wet under the hood. Do you have a second master key? If you do try it and use it to make another master, if not, you may find yourself going to the dealer.

A co-worker had a key go bad on her Ford Edge. The dealer told her if they are dropped hard or thrown the chip can be damaged. So yes they can go bad, but I don't think it is real common.

My 2002 Ford F150 does not have a chip in the key. Are you sure yours does?

Unless it was a fleet vehicle it will have the chip in the key. With the way keys get banged around they fail all the time, at least 13 year old Ford ones do.
