Should I be able to turn my Taurus off if it is not in park?

Yes,but it will have to be in park or neutral to crank back up.
Yes but you shouldn't be able to get the keys out of the ignition unless it's in park.
Well, the key came out. I went inside the school. They car rolled down a hill, took out a retaining wall, hit the play clock and ended up in the end zone of the football field! Should it have rolled? Is this a recall issue?
You should not have been able to pull key, other than in park, and what year model is your car.
Oh no! I hope nobody was hurt. No absolutely not, the key shouldn't have come out. I don't know of any recall. What year is your Taurus?
Have the half shaft checked, there was a recall ,where the shaft would come loose, and this would disingage, the linkage to the tranny, therefore it would be like car was in neutral, and could roll away.
The football boys were at the other end of the field - THANK GOD!! No one got hurt. It was a 2007 and it is tore up pretty bad!
That's good. Cars are replaceable people are not. Listen to T_S_T he might be on to something. Have a reputable mechanic look at it and see what happened to it. If it is under recall you should have been notified by Ford. If they didn't contact you then they could be liable for this mess.
Thank you very much! I will check into having the shaft looked at.
