Loose rubber hose on 04 Mercury Grand Marquis

Asked by GuruTF9MY Jul 19, 2018 at 12:46 PM about the Mercury Grand Marquis

Question type: General

There is a 15 inch rubber hose hanging from the left rear axle on my 04 Grand
Marquis. One end is attached to the axle and the other end is hanging loose.
There is no clamp or marks on the hose indicating that it was once attached to
something. Is this some sort of vent tube or should it be attached somewhere.

It is a vent tube that is for letting the rear axil breath . When the axil heats up the air expands and creates presure on the seals . It should be tied to something so the open end of the tube is pointing to the rear so dirt and water is not forced into the differential at high speeds through the tube .
