power steering moans when turnig at 62K miles

How is the fluid level? The moaning is usualy an indication of low fluid.

I have owned allot of Fords and all of them have extremely noisy power steering pumps. They whine and moan all the time! Despite all of their noises, they can be kept going strong (and relatively quietly) if you know how to properly maintain them. Don't disconnect any high pressure lines or return lines to drain the fluid, just open the reservoir and first check the fluid level. If it is low, you could have a leak. So, even if the fluid is at a normal level, you're going to want to replace it. Ford power steering pumps, unlike Chevy or Honda were designed to run on MerconV transmission fluid and adding regular power steering fluid is a fatal mistake that many Ford owners often make. That Transmission fluid cleans the system and works better at a higher range of temperatures. Here's how to drain the fluid... Take a siphon (If you don't have one, a turkey baster will work just as well) and start to siphon out some of the old fluid off the TOP of the reservoir. Be VERY careful that you don't get air past the bottom of the reservoir or you will get air in the system and it will sound like there's a dying cat under the hood when you start it. After you have drained the reservoir about three-quarters of a way, carefully and slowly add New MerconV transmission fluid with a funnel. Be careful not to get air bubbles in the fluid as you pour it in. Once it is filled to the proper level, put the cap on, start the engine, and turn the wheel a few times to circulate the fluid. It should be a little bit quieter. If it has not completely fixed the whine, repeat the process again until it is quiet. If this doesn't work, it probably means that you have a small leak in a line that is allowing air into the system and causing it to whine... That is every unlikely!! All my fords have original power steering pumps because I do this about every 10,000 miles. I have a 23 year old Lincoln Mark VII with 173,000 miles where the power steering pump is original and it runs as quit as new. Good luck!
