2011 forester 2.5 engine

I’m told that only a 2011 2.5L with the 6th digit of
the vin#  Is a “B” will replace that engine . Why
can’t you use any other 2.5L from say a 2010 or
2012 ?

You can run into electronic incompatibilities, basic engine configurations can be different so emissions will no longer be viable so you can't get it licensed. It must be numbers matching for it to be a plug and play engine.
