what is generally the cause of oil usage (no external leaks) for a 99 Forrester

engine usues approx. 1 qt every four hundred miles. The term "blow by" used by subaru car techs. Is that a characteristic of this engine

it could be your piston rings starting to go or your valve guide seals, all motors use a little oil but that is waaay to much.

Using 5w oil? If so, switch to 10w...and absolutely avoid synth! If in warm climate just use 20w/50 year round. You'll be surprised.
