where under the hood is air conditioning on 1991 legacy

I've been told I can make a simple adaption with "tips" from Walmart so I can use freon in my a/c instead of R12. I am getting and no one seems to be able to even check the a/c to see what the problem is. I don't want to spend a lot of money as the car is going to have to go soon. It's been very good to me until last year. It even has the original exhaust system. Thanks for any help.
