Transmission Problems?

Asked by jaazzephry Aug 23, 2014 at 01:13 PM about the Mitsubishi Eclipse

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I've heard that the automatic transmissions tend to go out quickly on these cars. I just
wanted to know from anyone who has had problems with the AT or never experienced any
problems as well.
I personally have one with 81k miles and no problems so far...

I am struggling with AT problems. As i have now done a ton of research, I can tell you that there is a dual layer wave spring inside the trans that is prone to break into several small pieces. When this wave spring breaks, it gets the bits either lodged in the valve body, or they most often get into the pump gear breaking it. When this happens, the transmission is toast, and for whatever reason, if you are in possession of the GTS model only, the trans is about double the price of all other models to rebuild or replace. If I knew then what I know now, and you are planning on keeping theis car, I would go ahead and have that spring replaced. It might be pricey, but not so much as buying a whole new transmission and valve body, torque converter, ect.
