Security issue or something else?

Asked by Shaverb Mar 06, 2013 at 09:25 PM about the Jeep Grand Cherokee

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just purchased a jeep Cherokee as a toy. It has sit still for a year or so and the battery is dead.
When I try to jump it off it is like a security system of some sort is keeping it from running.  The
head lights will blink off and on, it will turn over and even start but will only idle for several
seconds. It seems like it is not getting any fuel. Is there a security switch somewhere I cant find or
what. Any ideas will be very helpful.

Don't know if you solved your problem I had a 1995 cherokee and when the battery died it must reset security. The lights would flash would turn over but not start. Take ignition key unlock drivers door turn clockwise than counterclockwise than try to start that worked or me.

Glad to know why my 97 Grand Cherokee Ltd took the jump but wouldn't stay running and alarm was going off. Two things though: 1) I just put a new battery in it recently but haven't been driving it and left the alarm on. 2) The door key locks were removed a long time ago so since it was locked with fob I used tailgate key to enter and unlock doors from inside. How now to disarm the security system? Somehow using tailgate key?

Locking and unlocking the tailgate should reset the security system.

I have a 95 ZJ 4.0L with an oem passive security system. I was helping a Friend work on his Jeep for several hours with the rear hatch open for several hours which allows the interior lights to stay on. At the end of the day I went to start the ZJ to leave and there was some sound from what sounded like the solenoid but the starter nor engine would turn over. The head and taillights began flashing at the same time where the security indicator remained on steady. So I tried resetting the security but the same thing occurred when trying to start. So my friend tried to give me a jump with the security reset but the same thing occurred. What this security system FSM refers to this condition as, is power up alarm mode. Power up alarm mode. When the battery is disconnected and reconnected the security system enters into a power up alarm mode. - Flashes headlight - Flashes Park and taillights - Prevents the engine from starting. In order to prevent the engine from starting the PCM disables the fuel injectors fuel delivery (pulse). In my case I was eventually able to start the engine by cranking over the engine for ~30 seconds or more until the engine started. I think the probem may have been lack of fuel or fuel pressure as the security system disables the fuel injectors when in power up alarm mode. Then when you go to start the engine (security system not in power up alarm mode) there isn't enough fuel to start the engine quickly. I'm only guessing here as I'm not certain what happened. After the ZJ 4.0L engine started it ran and started again just fine. Anyway something caused the security system to think that the battery had been disconnected. Either low battery or a loose or corroded connection?

A young man showed me this simple method to disable your security system from preventing you from starting your Jeep. It actually makes sense since it trains the anti theft system to ignore. You need two keys. Place one key in the passenger door and twist clockwise position. Leave that key in the door and then use the other key to start your vehicle. While the vehicle is running, remove the passenger door key. I wished I knew this before spending money for a new ECM!
