Saturn Vue 2008 - transmission failed

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2008 vue - 60,000 miles. Transmission failed today with no warning. It started hesitating a little when I put it in reverse over the weekend, but nothing big. I planned to take if for an check today, but the transmission went before I got there. Best part, powertrain expired 6 days ago and I was told by the dealership that GM probably won't honor any of it. So disappointed.

First of all, I just saw that there was a recall on the transmission in May 2008.  I purchased mine in July 2008, and no mention of a recall was brought up. I guess I should have checked, but why would a brand new car have a recall. Anyone know anything about this recall?

Second, I am seeing many posts about the same problem.  The dealership I'm working with said they don't even know about the recall.  What do I do to pursue this?

Third, I found out when I called that my powertrain warranty expired 6 days ago.  Seriously?!  GM apparently will not honor this warranty.  So frustrated.  Do I have a leg to stand on?

Comments appreciated~

You just might have a Lemon Law case that you can pursue with the help of a Lawyer. The recall announced in May 2008 should have been addressed with your Saturn...Sounds like BS as far as the Powertrain Warranty as well. Talk to a Lawyer on the phone, get a free consultation from him/her and see what you can do to strong arm the dealer!!

Perfect storm for you- so sorry- you could try calling GM district reps, managers, Detroit- hey, it's just a call and you would have something to talk about on the forums- back in the old days when I worked at a Ford dealership, I would see the Ford reps approve these kinda things all the time- I was amazed, to see a company that cared about the little guy- don't know if they still do that- a tranny is enough money, you should spend some time spreadin' the word- odd how in the age of blogs and forums, Facebook and Twitter, the big manufacturers wouldn't want to bend a little- is there a Saturn forum- see if GM cares about their reputation going down, down, down

Didn't the 2008 Vue have a CVT? that's the first problem right there 2008 Saturn Vue Recall ID # 81134 - POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION Recall Date MAY 05, 2008 Component POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION Model Affected VUE Potential Units Affected 26........ I am also glad to find this forum. I have a 2008 Vue. About a week and a half ago, I took it to the dealer for a routine oil change. I had no issues with the car. That same evening, my check engine light comes on and it won't shift past 1st. I took it back to the dealer as I assumed they forgot to finish something during the oil change. They kept my car for 2 days. When I went to pick it up, they told me that two Transmission codes had come up but they cleared them out. He told me I needed to drive the car to see if they come back. And, if they come back I'm looking at thousands in repairs or he suggested I trade it in. All from an OIL CHANGE. So, the light came back on over the weekend. I am taking it to another mechanic to get a second opinion tomorrow. I am sick over this. My warranty also expired less than a month ago.

Aside from the automatic transmission recall, the 2008 Vue also has MAJOR issues with the Fuel System and Electrical System according to Consumer Reports. If you can afford to do so, I'd suggest trading it in, but NOT for another GM product. (I've been let down by the one GM product that I owned Pontiac Fiero and the 2 Pontiac Grand Prix's that I had as company vehicles in the past). Try a Mazda CX-5 (or CX-9), Toyota RAV-4, Honda CR-V, or Subaru Forester as possible alternatives. Taking on a new or used car note or a lease is a big deal....No sense in getting locked in on a deal on a sub-par vehicle.

Racer, I loved my '85 Fiero V6- no indictment of GM in general (pun intended) can help these poor Saturn owners- if it is a CVT, I think the blame lies there- these trannys seem to me unnecessary, considering the state of the art automatics that are around now- but notice that for the '14-'15 model year, MANY manufacturers list CVTs as options, or as the only available trans- maybe somebody can build a long-lasting CVT, but not on my dime- philosophy aside, this owner is just left holding the bag- if an owner in this position can afford a lawyer, there may be some hope- but I agree that replacing the trans and offing it is the wisest decision- as for GM, if I could, I would take a chance with a new Corvette!

Jamnblues...I had the '87 Fiero GT with the 2.8L V6 with the Auto Trans. (test drove the MT version and didn't care for the tall gearing, long shift throws, the "Shift Up" dummy light (that's just demeaning to anyone who knows how to drive a stick!)....clutch itself wasn't bad....if I recall properly. Loved the handling and performance of the car, but after the rebuilt engine, rebuilt tranny and constant overheating problems, I fell out of love with the Fiero. I hear ya on the Vette...That would be the ONLY exception I'd make as far as a GM car is concerned. I'd love to own one too, especially the new Stingray ..damn that's a beautiful car :)

Here is a revenge tactic from down south. If the dealerships will not help you, or even if they do and take to long, you can draw the peoples eye to you problem. Make a wooden sign which is shaped in the form of a triangle and has a wooden base. The wooden base should had just enough room to place ropes through it.. On the sign in bold color, paint what is wrong with the car and put the dealers name under it, in huge letters, in the red paint. Say the dealer sold you a lemon or wont fix it on the warranty. Really any thing you would like that would embarrassed the dealer. Also warn people NOT to buy from that dealer. Put on roof with a rope or bungle tag and drive around the city, past the auto dealer etc. I would leave it on until you get a reply from them. You can always use magnetic signs on the doors saying the same thing. But use the magnetic signs with the roof top sign! I do believe that a company who does not follow the warranty - even 6 days out - should be made public, and it a way that allows the car owner revenge. Use your second car to put the signs on by the way - if the first does not work. And say truthful..if anything you say can be backed by a piece of paper than the dealership has no recourse under the law. A lemon is a charge you can make - since it is subjective. And call you lawyer too - not to get his go ahead with the sign...but as another of your answers suggestive to you. Good Luck!! Michelle

Ouch. We had similar issue with our 2004, bought new. CVT was recalled in 2008, and the 1st one GM dealer put in failed within a month. 2nd one worked, but it was prorated cost ($2500 of $5000). Anyway, lasted 120k until April, when my daughter backed out of her parking deck space but couldn't go forward. Loved the car, hated the trans, about to put on Craigslist for $600.
