Transmission failure 2008 Saturn Vue

Asked by BigJohn54321 May 22, 2018 at 05:25 PM about the 2008 Saturn VUE XE V6 AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Everybody should know that the transmission
warranty on this a six speed unit has been extended
to 10 years/100+ thousand miles. I called my Vin
number to Jim see you when I had a catastrophic
transmission failure, and they confirmed that I was
in #Warranty until October 2018. It is currently in the
dealership shop undergoing repairs/replacement as
I speak. They say it is under  Full warranty and I will
not be charged. They have also given me a Loaner
car since the repairs are under warranty. If you have
a transmission failure and get it fixed on your own,
then there’s nothing they can do to help you.

The correct information is that the so-called warranty starts from the date the car was originally purchased and even if you experience the problems noted in the warranty letter which is specific to and only covers the wave plate failure where the transmission in the 6T70/6T75 tranmissions specifically slip in 3rd, 5th and experience refusal to go into reverse, the dealer will still charge you to diagnose. Here is how it works. You go to the dealer and they will charge you an initial diagnostic fee. They will tell you that the transmission needs to be torn down to determine IF the problem is covered by the warranty. There is another component that can cause a similar problem so if they determine that another problem exists in addition to the wave plate failure, you pay for the diagnostic which is often upwards of $850. If you decide not to have the car transmission fixed because of any reason including the fact that you can get a rebuilt or remanufactured transmission installed for much less than the dealer charges you are out of luck as the car can no longer be driven at all, even if it was able to be driven into to the dealership. You are then stuck either having it towed at your own expense or forced to pay the dealer for the repair. The dealer will not accept your description of the failure even if they test the transmission and find out the same thing you did, they will insist that the transmission be taken apart and that leads you down a road to a $4000+ repair. Do not think GM didn't figure all this out because the "warranty" was issued in 2015 and by then most people who bought 2008/09 Saturn Vues already exceeded the mileage of the warranty. That left only about 3 years to get past anyone with lower mileage but those people probably timed out except those who purchased brand new by Feb 2009. WARNING: GM will refuse any warranty claim even if the problem started during the warranty period. If you are in California, follow the remedy provided for by the Song-Beverly Warrant act which states by law the manufacturer must extend the warranty until the problem is fixed if the problem existed during the warranty period. If your transmission fails because of the 3/5/R problem that means the wave plate was defective when it was built and therefore the problem existed during the warranty period. You are not a mechanic and therefore can't be realistically expected to diagnose a symptom and tell GM about it which is their position. You are under no obligation to know during a warranty period of a part is defective but displays no outward symptom. GM takes the position that the transmission will fail with a defective wave plate and that somehow you should know your transmission has the defective part. They know which transmissions have the defect, they know the type of thread used to sew each seat cover together so they know which cars have the defective wave plate. They are trying to bully customers on this issue and issued a "warranty" they calculated to help the least number of customers possible. Do not let them get away with it. Report the matter to your agency that deals with breach of contract (warranty), contact your attorney general, make all kinds of noise and force GM to stand by their products they knew were defective when they built them. Read about this failure, all the people with the same problem can't be wrong and GM is right. Expect GM apologists to counter ever effort you try to hold GM accountable. Pay them no attention, push and be willing to go to all remedies are exhausted. GM is not the final say.

Oh yeah, BTW, that warranty included a way to get reimbursed if you've repaired your transmission for the specific 3/5/R failure. Do not listen to those telling you otherwise. Now, if you are not the original owner, the warranty they issued stopped when the owner sold the car anytime after the warranty was issued. That in and of itself tells you something. Why is that? GM knows that after 2015 most 2008/2009 owners had probably sold the vehicle as they were 7-8 years old by then. Many owners started hearing about the transmission failures and sold the cars knowing they would fail soon. GM knew it too otherwise MOST every other warranty in the automotive industry the warranty would have transferred since the defective part is not influenced by owner use nor is it a part that needs owner maintenance. Sneaky eh?

I bought one used. Had tranny work done at 82,000 miles. Now i'm at 85.300 and I just brought it to a transmission shop, and there are a whole slew of tranny codes on the vehicle and they said i'd be looking at $3000 atleast. Any advice?

I had the '02 sensor replaced, the position throttle sensor and the brake sensor as well as other things that need to be done because the O2 sensor is almost impossible to reach by a non-dealer garage. I purchased the extended warranty on my vehicle and had everything repaired and replaced that was going on with it prior to my warranty ending. Well, not even 6 months later the O2 sensor wasn't communicating with the engine ports A and B which was causing math rapid misfiring and then also causing the timing chain to go off and start making slapping grinding sounds and would not accelerate. I bought mine at Lannon Chevrolet. I brought it back to lannon Chevrolet.. and they tried charging me $900.. I told them I will not pay any of this as I didn't give you permission to rip my engine apart and put it in the trunk. But this exact repair has already been covered under warranty and they failed to fix the issue which caused it to reoccur and less than 6 months.. I got completely screwed! I still had a loan on this vehicle and never mind that I was one of the people that used Wells Fargo for my loan and got screwed in their deception practices. I still received checks today from the fraudulence.. definitely I was able to get everything cleared off and it looks like I paid my car loan in full because they knew I could have sued the absolute s*** out of them! Be very careful when purchasing vehicles through certain dealerships.. $18,000 have the car for less than 5 years! F****** waste!
