What's causing my problem?

'93 Beretta, battery charge seems good -- full lights, radio,heater functions,
door buzzer full volume, no 'grinding DOWN' sound when trying to start.
Found radiator water low; would that matter? Additional: after turning key
back 'off' heard low-loudness mechanical noise for few seconds, like small
motor still running.

No answer, but problem taken care of. Reliable village mechanic kept car most of that week. Put it up on rack, found no probable reason for the trouble ... then after bringing it back to earth, it started perfectly, He tested it several times each of next few days, also drove it around the area with no issues noted. Said probably the light-triggering sensor was stuck. I breathed sigh of (at least temporary) relief but will RENT when I take any long road trips.

The low "mechanical sound" you're hearing is coming from the rear end I'm 99% positive. That sound is your fuel pump. When the key is shut off after running, the fuel pump will do a final prime. The sound is absolutely nothing to worry about. If you don't hear it THEN you may have an issue. Easiest way you can tell if that is the sound: Get in, turn the key, but DON'T start. You'll hear the fuel pump prime itself to prepare to start the engine, if it's the same sound you're fine.
