Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just put a new 4.3 v6 engine in my 1999 chevy blazer. i tried turning it over the other day and it tries to turn over but wont start. i did a couple test and turns out I'm not getting spark. I'm getting fuel and battery is fine. any ideas? I'm thinking cam shaft sensor? new coil?

Yes, check the rotor on the underneath side in the center for a burn mark. Otherwise the coil and ignition control module would need to be tested which can be done at an auto parts store.

would it matter if the distributor is basically brand new? what does the burn mark mean?

Is it a new rotor in the distributor under the distributor cap? Is the distributor put in correctly?

Ok, so it is not the cap & rotor since there new. When putting back in the distributor, did you have the rotor pointing in the same direction as when you pulled the distributor out? And it sounds like a new Ignition Control Module in there also. I'm not convinced you have the distributor in there correctly. Did this run before you started the work you did?

I'm not 100 on the same place as it was before but I am 99 percent sure. it took awhile to get everything I needed to put the new motor back in. but I was at top dead center and stabbed the distributor back in just fine. no issues. I did not replace the ignition module. that's old. everything ran good before. I replaced the motor due to cylinder damage. distributor and everything else worked just fine.

When you put the distributor in was the rotor pointing at like 7 o-clock position? Not at the #1 spark plug tower?

the distributor spiders out with 3 on the driver side and 4 on the passenger side including the ignition sensor. I'm not 100 percent on which way the 7 oclock position would be. got some people at work telling me that I need to phase the distributor? with the crankshaft sensor??

Thats just getting the distributor in correctly. 7 o-clock from looking from the front of the motor is where the rotor should have ben pointing when you where on TDC on the compression stroke, #1 spark plug tower is on the right side. The #1 spark plug tower is on the right side, the contact for #1 underneath the cap is at 7 o-clock position.

I looked at what you said and It was correct. I understand now. and I did get it running over the weekend. turns out it was the crankshaft sensor. the wires were frayed a little so I went to a pick and pull and found a better one.

there is another question I just asked. maybe you could shed some light on that one??? lol
