yes...a clobbererd up with carbon EGR valve will do this~ pull it off and clean it with some brake cleaner or replace the unit altogether...you might just check to make sure the diaphragm is working and still has vacuum to it~

the EGR re-introduces exhaust gas back into the intake..the reason is to bring down the operating temperature....if your temperature sensor is tellin' it "you're runnin' hot" the EGR engages on acceleration, which we DO want it on de-celleration....so check your temp sensor...and check the EGR for carbon clobber~

the catalytic converter could be plugged increasing exhaust pressure and reducing acceleration and efficiency~

get your trouble codes read or do it yourself with one of these less then 20 dollar type devices~

1979 doesnt have that kind of stuff. 4bbl no electronics. straight piped exhaust

the temp sensor ain't much money....sending a "hot" signal when it ain't so hot would cause this problem~

you've an EGR valve~ the onboard computer DOES have "that kind of stuff"~

perhaps you are running the vehicle illegally with no catalytic converter or you're in a state that doesn't really care (like Alaska)~...but gave it my best shot on the information you gave me~ why was I able to find a temp sensor for the car if it has no electronics?...think again~

195 is the lowest temp that the engine should engage the thermostat at...if you're runnin without a thermostat will NEVER see operating temperature...check internal combustion engine 101 if in doubt~

it could have one but i built it all myself no electronics all mechanical. its legal because catalytic converters were not required until 85
Chevy van 79 want start, change ignition switch and checked starter still nothing
