Rear brake lights not working

Asked by Vieyel May 13, 2013 at 04:01 PM about the Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Signals, reverse, and day lights all work.  Rear brake lights do nothing when brake is
applied.  All fuses are good vehicle round.

Truck box with lights harness was removed last summer and tarped in the yard, lights
worked then.  Re-installed box, assembled lights, they didn't respond, used carburetor
cleaner on the connection plugs spent some time plugging and unplugging the
connectors of each while cleaning it and everything worked.  & days later brake lights
dont work when brake is applied.  All 3 bulbs in each light assembly work.  Now what?

Thanks

are all the connectors in good shape because carb cleaner likes to eat away at plastic and rubber.

yeah, Dan---good observation....just use a little rubbing alcohol on a cotton swap...on just the connection tabs to clean them if you must...a small brass wirebrush is best...NO chemicals....so it was this funky switch thing?....I'm glad to have helped you with this~

A lot of people have made this error in bulbs. The top bulb is the running lights and the brake lights. Both the top bulb and middle bulb have double filaments in them. If you are not changing out the top bulb, this is your probelm. While the running lights will burn the brake light s could be shot due to the double element or filament.
