1998 Ram 1500 4x4 Changing Info 4WD on its own

My 1998 Ram 1500 4x4 wants to shift from 2WD to 4WD when I hit a bump.
Starts to make a grinding noise as I drive. As I drive I can shift from 2WD to
4WD and noise goes away. Can then shift back to 2WD while I continue to
drive  and all is well again until the next bump. If I am already in 4WD then
bumps have no impact. I have also been having A/C problems with air only
coming out of defrost vents.

Still looking for an answer to this question. I've taken it to several shops and no one can seem to figure this out. I can't believe I'm the only one having this issue. I do have one shop that wants to completely rebuild a transmission but my gut tells me there's something much smaller going on here.
