Can you swap out an a late 70s or 80's 5 speed with a 1949 dodge four speed tranmission

I have a 1949 dodge with a four speed transmission top speed is about 40 mph
can a more modern transmission fit in its place that would have the same input
and output shafts and similar bolt patterns for the bell house

It won't be a direct swap but maybe you can find an adapter. The lack of speed may be due to a really low rear axle gear ratio.
