Loss of oil pressure at idle,5.7 hemi
Asked by steveh72 Feb 09, 2015 at 10:12 PM about the Dodge RAM 1500
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
2009 dodge ram 1500 4x4,5.7 hemi.125,000 miles. Recently loss of oil pressure at idle,in
gear, stopped. Drops down to 5 psi. At 70 mph, gauge reads 40-45 psi. Changed oil
pressure sensor with oem. Fixed for about a month. Now back to same issue. Control
module threw a code of oil pressure out of range/cam phasers. Im old school
mechanical. Not sure what to do here. First thought was oil pump and screen but have to
drop the front end and raise motor to do it. Not knowing for sure if thats the fix, its labor
intensive. Any one that can help would be greatly appreciated.

Rpm,s of oil pump not matching engine speed.Check drive of oil pump.OIL pumps have known to hydro glide while in service. With the water mixing oil will slide with 0 pressure, with loose tolerance of lower engine mass rotation slop is present.Replace Pcv valve change oil and use a mechanical gauge for accuracy.

Did you ever find out what it was that caused the problem? I have to ask because i just Hit 126000 miles on my dodge ram 1500 and its doing the same thing. Just had a oil change last month, no noises or anything and the oil is within range.
Hey,sorry for the delay. My engine is a MDS type. Hate it!!!! Anyways, the oil pressure issue for me was caused by the mds system. It shuts off 2 cylinders,Keeps them from firing when your cruising along down the highway. What it did was, cause one of the roller tipped lifters to go bad on the roller end and ruin the top end of the engine. I am like you,old school. Had i known what was happening, i would have torn it apart at that moment and redone the upper end of the motor. I kept doing small cheap fixes in hopes of it being fixed while driving it at the same time just because i didnt have the money to take it somewhere. My best advice to you is to stop driving it and take it to dodge for them to check. mine showed a constant misfire on #4 cylinder. Engines for an 09 are specific, did lots of research on this along with a couple of mechanics that I've befriended through this ordeal. You cant put a 10 engine in,or so I'm told. Feel free to call me at 210-701-2440. I would hate to see you pay the price I did.
Did yours do the same lose oil pressure are idle ?
Mine isn’t dropping to 5 psi. Mine does go as low as 14psi at an idle with an aftermarket cam and custom tune. Mine is not mds but I was told that the drastic change in the oil pressure is so that the cam phaser and the mds can work properly. A good rule of thumb is 10psi to every 1000 rpms on these engines. So 5psi sounds kinda creepy.
Gurul1pnn I changed my cam and also had the mds turned off now im having oil problems as well about 14psi. Which is throwing a code of oil pressure out of range. I also changed oil to 10w30 to clean it out less then 500 since I changed cams. I was planning to go back to 5w20 on next oil change. Im not a mechanic however i can get things done. Im thinking one of my bolts loosen on the oil pump? Im debating pulling the front off agian and checking every thing. Since its a new oil pump. What do you think?
CANT SEE THE THE END RESULTS..SO I CAN FIX MY TRUCK....EVERYBODYS GOT A PROBLEM... ....
HERE'S WHAT I'M DOING . I GOT A MELLING HI-PERFORMANCE PUMP, THAT HAS AND OPTIONAL, BY-PASS SPRING , YOU CAN IN STALL IN A MINUTE, THAT PROVIDE FOR 65 PSI, NORMAL USE. OR YOU MAY CHECK AND SEE IF THE STOCK OIL PUMP FOR A 6.1L ENGINE IS SET TO PROVIDE 65 PSI. IT MAY BE CHEAPER THAT THE MELLING PUMP. THIS SHOUDL ALSO INCREASE THE OIL THAT IS SUPPOSED TO GET TO THE TAPPET ROLLERS, AND KEEP THEM FROM GOING DRY AND KILLING THE CAM. I'M JUST REPLACING THE MDS SYSTEM WITH A STOCK, NON-MDS, CAM, ROLLER TAPPETS,AND PUTTING IN THAT OIL PUMP,SET TO 65 LBS.

This 2006 5.7 1500 Is doing the same thing i took the value cover's off and the return holes all 4 of them where stop up. Cleaned the heads both of them through this was the problem but the truck is doing the same thing again so i guess ill replace the P.V.C. Value and a gage again to see if it will holed any kind off oil psi after it run's a min. replace O.E.M. Oil Sensor still NO change. I would like to talk with some one who has fixed this Problem or know how to fix it. i could used so help please.
i have a 2010 ram 1500 laramie 5.7 hemi. Former Mechanic. 125,000 miles. Today for the first time ever, i had just arrived at a destination, the truck was at idle, and shut off. The oil pressure light came on when it shut off. Started again, no check engine lights, no oil light, no running issues but i did notice the oil pressure gauge was less than midway today when at low RPM. I noticed an odd noise from MDS a few weeks ago- started using the Tow Haul Feature to override the MDS system and the noise stopped. Most recent oil change was last week with 5w20 & fresh mopar filter. Ive had this truck for the last 9,000 miles and its had no issues other than the MDS noise. Im hoping someone can advise me given the near identical mileage and symptoms. John@BostonGutterGuys.Com is my email. Thanks!
I don’t know what to say my 2014 Ram 1500 just did this today unknown what the issue is I’m going to try an oil change and see if it helps
