can a superchip cause your clutch to slip?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 3/4 ton. My buddy wanted to see how my truck would operate with a "superchip"
installed it. The valves were slamming shut too hard so he decided to return the programming back to stock. Since
then my clutch has been slipping. Is there by chance that when he installed the superchip, could be the reason for
the slippage?

yeah it could if you were running a stock clutch for a long time then suddenly upped the horsepower then yes it could. The chip has nothing to do with your valves "slamming shut" you more than likely need a valve adjustment. by the way, superchips is a shitty tuner, look at smarty, edge or quadzilla for your truck (if its a diesel im assuming it is.)

I believe its the original clutch. My odometer reads 133,248K. I'm not sure about the longevity of them.

Now i dont know what that correlates to in american miles, but ive seen stock clutches on stock trucks last well over 170,000 miles. Ive also seen guys with 100,000 miles on their stock clutch, throw a tuner on their cummins and give it between 100 and 200 extra foot lbs of torque, and then wonder why they need to buy a new clutch, and wonder why the new stock clutch only lasts half as long. You gotta pay if you wanna play.

I mean im assuming this truck is equipped with the Cummins correct?

If your going to add more power to a stock clutch, then yes, it may slip. But superchips is a crappy tuner. My friend had it on his stock Duramax and it started messing up the transmission. I would honestly buy a new tuner like an Edge Juice with Attitude moniter.

The only tuner you should ever put on a duramax or 05-11 cummins is EFIlive. if you cant afford it save up your money till you can.

You cant put EFILive on an '05 cummins yet Dan. They havent came out with it yet. 06-09 yeah, you bet, but '05, no.

Ive upgraded all my electronics to that of an 06-07 5.9 cummins. believe me i indeed do have EFIlive on my 2005.

youre correct though with out doing the conversion its only available for 06-07 5.9 Cummins, and 07.5-11 6.7 Cummins engines.

You do? Thats awesome! I might have to do that to mine when I get it

Yeah its a 10000 dollar or better conversion though, since it involves replacing every computer and module on the truck, running CANbus communications wires, then going to your local dodge dealer and having them flash stock 06-07 5.9 files into the slugs (fresh computers) by the time it was said and done i had about 8 into parts, and if i had a shop do it id be looking between 3 and 4 into labor i believe. But hey its worth it, i do my own tuning and ive built an economy tune that ive seen close to 40 mpg with just cruising at 65.

That is awesome! I didnt think you could do that to a 03 and up Cummins, but now that I do, I think I know what I'm going to do when i get my Cummins! Might be expensive, but now that your mentioning that you can do it, I honestly do not care about price now lol

its expensive, aside from that its really easy since all the computers and things that need to be replaced are actually in rather easy to access areas
