Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently bought a '75 chevelle car had been
running great! But i dont drive my vehicles often so
one day i went to turn on my chevelle and the car
wouldnt turn over. My radio would turn on so i
eliminated my battery so i figured my distributor
was going bad. It looked very old possibly the
original one. I went to buy a new one (keep in mind
im no car guru) i re-installed the old distributor to
figure out how to get TDC but when i went to crank
the car battery was dead! So i went to charge
battery and kept old distributor in and got car to
turn over but now i hear a clicking noise coming
from it. My chevelle never made any noise before
this little project. I went to drive the car down the
street but now my car wont switch gears.
Pleeeease help me! What could this be? What can i
do to fix this problem i miss driving my chevelle!

I thought the engine was not running, how can you drive it down the street now? Switch gears...automatic or standard? Where are you with this?

It wasn't the distributor it was a very low charged battery. Its an automatic.

Switching gear is separate issue. Put a trickle Charger on the battery in between driving it. I would check transmission fluid and if its full then do a filter change, Will the trans shift from manually by hand by going past drive to low gear or 2nd or not go into any gear at all?

Fluids are fine. The car drove perfect before i tried to change out the distributor. I does go into low gear but when in drive it just refs high and wont change gears.

Then there is a problem with the trany. There may be a vacuum line running to a valve on the transmission. I remember this valve having an affect on the shifting of the transmission. Check it out. See if there is one. I can remember what year they eliminated that.

Ok, there is this valve on the side of the trany. It is called the Vacuum Modulator Valve. Check it out on this sight for a picture of it..... https://www.carid.com/opgi/vacuum-modulator-valve-mpn-ch30696.html?singleid=86164374&url=582704

Make sure and check the transmission fluid level, may be low on trany fluid. If the trany continues to slip, then its time for a rebuild.

You changed out the distributor so the vacuum line to trans hooks up down low back side there it may be off.
