High revs low rpm, or high rpm low gear?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Ive recently had a discussion about whether or not low rpm high gear is bad for
the engine. Ive been told that if a car does not reach high enough rpm it will
create a black coating on the pistons and therefore damage the engine. But is
this true? It seems odd to me.

If the drive train of the vehicle is o.k. the tranny will down shift if more power is needed , higher rpm's aren't a bad thing for an engine . Peak horse power occurs at higher rpm's , I think if you poke around town like an old man at low rpm's in high gear for a decade then yes , crud will build up in the intake . You should open up the throttle on highway ramps it ain't going to hurt anything .
