How does tax, title and registration work for out of state delivery purchases?

Question type: General

I am very interested in a vehicle that comes from out of state and i would
need to buy and have it shipped to me. I have never bought out of state
before, and every time I have bought from a dealer here they do the tax, title
and registration at the time of purchase, thus wrapped into my loan. How is
this handled for these types of out of state online purchases? Will I have to
pay for tax, title and registration on my own like a private person to person
purchase?

When I bought my 94 Fleetwood it was an out of State purchase. I paid cash for the vehicle. Before I went to pick up the vehicle I added it to my automobile insurance policy. The Dealer issued me a 30 day temporary North Carolina transfer license plate which also served as my temporary registration. I recieved the clear North Carolina title, odometer statement, and sales invoice from the Dealer when I picked the car up. I did not pay sales tax at that time in North Carolina. I drove the car home to New Jersey. In New Jersey I paid the sales tax, received my New Jersey title, registration, and license plates at my local Motor Vehicle Agency just as I would have if I had bought the vehicle privately in New Jersey. I should note that I presented the Motor Vehicle Agency in New Jersey with the North Carolina title and the other paperwork I received from the Dealer in North Carolina. It then became New Jersey's responsibility to pay North Carolina any sales tax due. Hope that helps! Jim
