Try flushing the cooling system with a chemical cleaner. Follow the directions on the bottle. Do you know the vehicle's history? Perhaps someone put some kind of stop leak product in the cooling system. This is why you should never use that stuff! Is your heater working? Blowing hot air? The 2.2L 4 cylinder is a sturdy little engine. I don't know much about the 2.4L engine. Try the flush. After 20 years there's probably a lot of junk in the cooling system. If your heater is not working that tells us you either have poor coolant circulation or the heater core is clogged. If the heater core is clogged it's safe to assume the rest of the cooling system is too. Hope that helps! Jim

First do a compression test , And if the radiator is pooped up no amount of flushing will clear things up it has to be replaced , But do the comp. test before you start dumping money into an old car , When was the last caviler made ?

Why do none mention chemical block test to see if exhaust fumes are getting into the cooling system . It's the quickest way to confirm a blown head gasket and is a cheep test kit to purchase . A good shop will do this test for less then $30 for you.
