Question type: Car Customization

Hello,My name is Keith.I am new to this fourm and these camaro,s.
I have just purchased a 1987 camaro with no motor or transmission in it.I am woundering if you can put a older 350 engine in it.Use a carburator,no fuel injectors,no computer.Just put a stock 350 in it.
And if you can what all has to be done.
I will put pictures of the car up later when I get it in my yard.
                 Thanks in advance

1987 was the first year for the VATS (antitheft system)and the computer. You will have to work around these issues to go back to a carburated system and non computer transmission. Set your priorities, what purpose are you going to use this car for? For race/drag purpose you can gut out the electrical components related to the computer and install what you need to get the car to run (bare bones electrical) If you are going back to original, then you will have to work around the electrical issues or else you will have a permanent "ENGINE" light staring you in the face. You will need to have a VATS key with a chip to start the car and keep it running. An '87 also used a computer controlled trans (200R or 700R). My personal opinion would be to use a 87 and up FI setup and 4 speed OD trans, these engines are plentiful and are cheap horsepower.

If the car has no motor or trans then any electronic trans is not of concern. The anti theft usually disables fuel or spark, without the computer it doesnt even matter about a CEL. Casue there shouldnt be a computer to throw up an issue. I'm also faily certain a 200r and 700r are hydrolicaly controlled and will work with no computer. The 4l60e is the electronic 700r4 and those phased in during the early-mid 90's. The only problem i see is possible hood clearance or just use a small air filter. If the igntion switch need the computer then just re-wire it. If you cant to that then you shouldn't be doing an engine swap other than stock.

super easy. i went with a 400 instead of a 350 but same thing. i found it easier to just buy an entirely new wiring harness as well.

A preformance (or performance) chip is not gonna work with a carburetor. They do little to nothing for most fuel injected cars.
