Dealer misrepresentation of condition of vehicle

Asked by Stapel Nov 16, 2018 at 11:17 AM about the 2013 Lexus RX 350 AWD

Question type: General

We recently purchased a 2013 Lexus RX350 that was listed on CarGurus.
The dealer insisted that there was nothing wrong with the car.  After we
purchased it and took it in for an oil change the next week, we were told that
the timing belt case was not sealed correctly and could start leaking at any
time.  The cost to fix this quoted at $4500, or about 30% the price we paid for
the car.  Does CarGurus monitor their dealers for misrepresenting the
condition of the vehicles that they sell?

I can't speak for CarGurus but it's legally impossible to hold anyone responsible without some written guarantee on the condition of a vehicle. Dealers know this. They talk a big story knowing you have nothing written to hold them on. But the good news is that repair an easy fix at an independent shop. I had a car that did that. A bolt had fallen out and the rest were loose. I didn't even replace the gasket. So get several quotes. And that leak will start as seepage not a geyser of oil. Watch for drips on the ground and check the oil level frequently.
