Blown engine

Asked by Skbrownks Jul 06, 2019 at 03:29 PM about the 2009 Lexus RX 350 AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We have a 2009 Lexus RX with 77,000 miles on it.  We recently had a terrible
experience with it. There were no warnings, no flashing lights, no anything
until 3 seconds before there was a loud sort of grinding, banging noise, the
power steering went out and the engine quit. Fortunately we were able to
reach the side of the road.  They tell us the engine overheated and blew a rear
seal. The engine needs to be replaced.  I mean how many cars blow an
engine at a79,000 miles.  Let alone a Lexus!  And with no warnings. We are
very upset with both the car and with the company.  Lexus US refused to help
with the cost. REALLY?  79,000 miles?  No warnings?  Any suggestions as to
options?  Has anyone else experienced this?

Who diagnosed the engine that it needs to be replaced? The lexus dealer? Have an independent garage look at it to confirm you need a new engine. Dealers like to replace parts, not repair. If the engine Can be repaired, then you can potential save some money.

Any engine can go out at low miles if it seriously overheats. If the timing belt broke it is also very costly to put right.
