will a 96 steering coloum switch into an 86

No. Not for OEM. For OEM Stock complete units 86-89 are the years to focus on. Some individual parts interchange from previous years maybe from the 90 too, and aftermarket units interchange between years. Some do use up to 89 in older 84-86 cars but the key will have to be carried over with the newer column. 1984-85 interchange. 1986-89 interchange. 1990-93 interchange. 1994-96 interchange. Of course the 96 has air bag. From a bolt up point I believe it will, but from connectors ect you will need to figure it out. Let us know. I do know that aftermarket columns state they fit 84-96.
