2023 Tucson Ultimate Hybrid Hybrid System Failure

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was travelling on Bishop Grandin at Waverley when I slowly started losing
speed going from 70 down to 0. Stepping on the gas did nothing. When I
reached 30 mph I started getting a message with the warning alarms going
crazy alerting me that I had a "Hybrid System Failure".( The gas engine
would not cut in. ) ...I was fortunate to be able to pull over three lanes with
the other drivers seeing my hazards on and letting me move over. The
vehicle was still running but I couldn't move and the hybrid battery system
graphics on the info screen showed it being completely depleted.   The
Murray Hyundai dealership took it for test drives and did not have a problem.

Focus where I purchased my vehicle
As Paul mentioned in his email, we all follow the same repair procedures but
if they have already started it would be recommended to continue at the
same dealer so that all the information is in the same place and the same
technician can look at it further when the issue occurs.

So if there is an accident I will be able to tell MPI that Murray Hyundai was
unable to locate the problem.  And Focus Hyundai (where we purchased our
vehicle) will not check out the vehicle.

Were you towed to the Murray Dealer because it was the closest authorized dealer to your location at the time of the break down? If so, that has no bearing on the repairs and it sounds to me to be Focus is trying to weasel out of a warranty repair. This also sounds to me like the beginning of a Lemon Law claim. So document everything! One of the wonderful things about today's technology is that dealers can easily transfer information, including repair orders and associated documents, to each other. So Focus has no excuse for not working on the vehicle. The real problem is, and this happens a lot with vehicles new or old, is when an intermittent problem can't be duplicated by the dealer's service department. Once you've been towed from the side of the road a few times, and have documented proof of this, you can start pushing for a buyback under The Lemon Law. I'm assuming you bought the vehicle brand new. In the meantime I'd suggest calling or emailing Hyundai Customer Service. Explain what has happened and be sure to tell them that Focus is refusing to work on the vehicle. Good luck to you with this. Jim

Thank you, James, for the information. I have a case number from Hyundai Customer Service, and I've filed a claim with Transport Canada and CAMVAP. I assume Hyundai would prefer that I sell the vehicle. Murray has informed me they would provide a safety certificate. I visited another dealership to consider another Hyundai and shared the issue of failure; they were not aware of any problems with a vehicle like ours.
