2006 Corolla - need to hit the gas pedal to start
Asked by jasper502 Jul 29, 2015 at 01:04 AM about the 2006 Toyota Corolla CE
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have a 2006 Corolla that I just bought. It has an intermittent issue where it will not start
unless you give it a bit of gas when turning over. The starter is turning and you can here it
sputtering. A slight touch of the gas seems to do the trick. After driving for a while you
can't reproduce the issue. No codes being thrown.
Any ideas where to start troubleshooting?

Clean throttle body and replace fuel filter.
All due respect ...replacing fuel filter is an expensive or DIY time consuming task. The only fuel filter in a 2006 Corolla is a mesh 'sock' attached to the fuel-pump pick up. You have to remove back seat to get to fuel pump access panel, remove fuel pump, gauge sending unit, all the while with a empty tank. It's a good thought firebird338, I just don't know if you have ever done one on an '06 Corolla, and know how difficult it is. There is no other filter. Otherwise, I agree about cleaning throttle body. It is designed to start without touching gas pedal. The ECU 'knows' when it is cold start, warm start, whatever it is and will adjust fuel trim accordingly - - to the optimum 14.7:1. Now, about TPS, schalk, all due respect-- I have read many of your answers and can tell that you do know what you are talking about, just mistaken on this one.Throttle Position Sensor, no. The TPS is for when the engine is running, has no input for start. It's Drive-By-Wire.
geez, after all that i forgot about your question jasper502 -- sorry 'bout that. Have a look-see at these sites, I will put each separate to make it easy to hyperlink. I really think you will find the solution in one on these, in order of (my opinion) best

Forget all the 4X4 and everything in the address, same procedure. http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenance/30_V6/throttle_body/
I am going to buy the Hanes manual anyway and try cleaning the TB. That seems to be the likely issue. It runs fine otherwise. The shop that i took it to for the pre-purchase inspection figured it was the starter. I doubted that all along because it turns over fine. It idles fine and has never stalled. When it falls to start it reminds me of high school with my Mercury Zephyr with the all red interior :)
jasper502 you are right . NOT the starter. Oh, lord,. what kind of people are calling themselves mechanics these days? Also, that supports my opinion about the TPS. Idles fine. Way cool Zephyr there dude!
