What does "the gears have gone out" mean, related to manual 1994 Ford Ranger

Clutch in, shifter moves but does not engage gear and truck does not move. The
repair shop at first said something about a bearing and a shaft, now that they have torn it
apart they said "the gears have gone out". I just don't understand exactly what that
means or what has to be done to fix the problem?

It means internal damage in the trans, it means time to rebuild.
It means you need a rebuilt transmission. Oversimplified, but the principal in a manual transmission has 'drive gears' and 'driven gears'. As you shift to a higher gear, the drive gear meshes with progressively larger driven gears to put out a faster output speed on output shaft. The can strip cogs or break off.

If you pull it yourself then possibly yes, depending on the condition of the internal parts, keep in mind you still have the cost of the clutch and components on top of the rebuild.

Fordnut, CamaroCollector and Tom, now the story is a "bent transmission shaft" - as a suspicious, confused mom, I wonder what would cause a bent transmission shaft? Could it be that the truck has been taken somewhere it shouldn't have been?
