It sounds like you are on the way to getting it timed. I assume you have a timing light but one way to get the timing close is static timing. Put the engine at TDC compression on #1 piston and set the distributor so that the rotor points to number one on the distributor. This will be a good start. You don't say what engine you have so I can't be anymore specific.
