1999 4.8L Chevy 1500 no Reverse

My 1999 4.8L 1500 w/nearly 315K original miles suddenly won't drive in reverse.  Doesn't seem to even drop into gear.  Also shifts hard and "whines" in low gear.  Figure tranny died - thoughts?

take it to a tranny shop , your instincts are probably right
