2001 Chevy Silverado fuel pump issues

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I replaced my fuel pump in my 2001 Chevy Silverado 4.3 liter v6. I
removed the bed and installed a new fuel pump I tried to start the
truck after the installation and it's still acting starved for fuel and I
don't hear the fuel pump coming on. So I went back to the auto parts
store and swapped the new pump for another new pump and same
thing. I changed the relay I don't have a way to test fuel pressure. My
question is would the ground wire from the fill neck of the gas tank
not being hooked up make the fuel pump not come on? The ground
wire is only connected to the filler neck and to the bed of the truck. I
didn't put the bed back on after the installation.

It started prior to me doing the fuel pump but it wasn't reliable. Sometimes it would leave me stranded. And when it wouldn't start I couldn't hear the fuel pump.

Just ground out that wire, just sounds like the fuel pump is not running because of no power.

Just doesn't sound like the fuel pump is running. There should be a black wire for ground at the fuel pump, the strap must be bolted to the frame then to the filer neck, thats just for static discharge from when your filling the tank. You need a test light or volt meter to see if there is power to the fuel pump. If there is, it is a ground wire not making connection for the pump to run.

Just found out it was a bad ground wire leading to the fuel pump

no that wire has nothing to do with the pump. but it should be fixed. but if you have a clogged fuel filter it will not turn on if it is clogged as it is reading high pressure. so you will only know on the first round and re leave the pressure on the fuel rail. also ad a new ground on the fuel pump while you have the bed off and check the rear brake line. they always brake right up over the tank and with the bed off it is easy to replace rear brake line while you are already there.
