Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 Chevy Silverado with a 4.3 V6. I was driving down the interstate and all the sudden my truck stalled and I have not been able to get it started since.  I replaced the fuel filter and the spark plugs to take care of the cheap stuff first. After replacing the fuel filter and spark plugs and recharging the battery, I turned it over and it started but ran rough. I pressed on the throttle and it died. My next thought was the fuel pump. When I turn the key to the on position I can hear the fuel pump activate. At the valve on the fuel return line coming off the throttle body there is pressure. The fuel will shoot out when I press the pin in, so I dont believe its the fuel pump. I can get it to start when I put some fuel directly into the throttle body but once the fuel is used up it dies. This makes me believe its still a fuel issue, not air or spark. I think its possibly a sensor or my fuel spider but need some help narrowing it down. Or I may be completely wrong, Im just needing some guidance. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Use caution spraying anything in the throttle body if it is a vortex engine. They have plastic intakes and if it back fires thru the intake you will be replacing it. I found that out the hard way with plastic parts flying all over my back yard.

Did you check the fuel pressure with a test gauge? You should have 60 - 66 psi if fuel pump is operating properly.

No I don't have a test gauge, I'll probably go get one to make sure its at the right pressure.

Have read where some owners with your same issue was only showing around 38 psi at test port and theirs would not crank either. They replaced fuel pump and it cranks now. Might be a good place to start checking.

When I pressed the pin in on the fuel pressure valve, there was some air that came out first(its been fuel since). Would air in the lines affect the injectors to where they wouldn't spray fuel into the cylinders?

Should not have had air in there. Sure sounds like a fuel pump issue. Test it to know for sure

30 psi will shoot out but wont run the truck, it needs to be above 50psi.

I rented a fuel pressure test kit and the psi shot up to 30 but immediately began dropping. Im going to replace the fuel pump tomorrow and hopefully that'll fix it. Thank you for your help and ill post the results

I've been trying to fix my 2002 chevy silverado 1500 5.3L vortex but I haven't succeeded, the problem is very similar to this guy's truck doing a very rough idle; start but very weak to go forward or in reverse, old pump has 50 p.s.I then I've replaced it for a new aftermarket fuel pump but it still the same p.s.I (50). I'm in need of your knowledge I will really apprecuate your help. What can I do or what could it be the fix to this problem? Thanks

I am having an issue with my dads 2001 Chevy Silverado. ...he currently passed so I've been taking g care of his truck.... I change the oil about 3 weeks ago I guess I left the engine cap off but I've been driving around suddenly one day I pulled into the driveway went in and came back and it would not start it turned over but wouldn't actually crank up. So I bought the engin cap. The oil finally pressurized so so I go home and get ready to go get something to eat it won't start again this time it won't turn over at all I did not know that my dad's truck I ttaks fuel injectors could this be the reason....I also smell gas when continuously trying to crank. I've changed the oil two or three times since he passed....never did any fuel injectors

Have a 2000 Chevy Sil 1500 and I can here a noise by the gas tank. and when I was on a trip running all day got gas filled it up. starting going and my light flashed on saying I had no gas.Put it in park and stopped. Then the gas level went back up. Truck never stopped running. Is these signs of the fuel pump going out?

Guruyh88m that sounds like the fuel sender which doesn't affect the drive-ability only the operation of the gauge. My truck has a gauge that works when it wants for the last two years now. Just sender, not pump.

have a friend take a rubber hammer and pound on bottom of tank and you are trying to start vehicle, if that works you need a fuel pump. that is the cheap and quick way to back yard test. or if you turn key to run, not start and listen to hear fuel pump. you can also re-leave the pressure under the hood on the fuel rail. looks like a tire valve cap, open and press, make sure your face is not close and wear safety goggles. then turn key on again and listen, it should build up pressure and you will hear it run for about 5 seconds.
